November Is The Perfect Time To Get Winter Ready!
Is Your Generator Ready For Colder Temperatures With Winter Right Around The Corner?
We are teaming up with our friends at Ready.Gov with an important message here in early November—it’s time to get Winter Ready! It’s not only something you should do for your family in the home, but also at work to get your standby generator ready for use!
“Getting winter ready means making sure your industrial or commercial genset is ready to perform when weather or increased electrical demand causes an outage,” said Tim Lathan at Generator Source at our Colorado headquarters. “You should have your unit serviced so it is ready to provide standby power. Particularly in colder climates like Colorado, making sure the engine block heater is fully ready to work is a great idea besides basic maintenance.
“If your business counts on an industrial generator and you operate in a region where the temperature falls below 60°F (16°C), then you should have the engine block heater checked frequently as a part of routine maintenance,” added Lathan. “That pretty much means any location where nighttime temperatures dip below 60-degrees for optimal start up and performance. We all saw the effects of the deep freeze in Texas, and Florida even sees a few freezing temperatures too.”
Generator Source offers worldwide sales of 60 Hz generators. Offering field service and rentals gensets in Florida, Texas and Colorado as well, Generator Source is well versed in numerous regional climates and has been selling, repairing and maintaining gensets for 40 years.
Now is also a good time to buy a generator, whether you are upgrading your current genset or adding standby power for the first time to your business.
“There is a great tax break built into the purchase of an industrial generator during Q4 right now,” added Lathan. “It’s called Section 179 and it lets businesses take advantage of the tax code by writing off the full cost of an industrial generator for backup power immediately instead of depreciating the asset over its useful life. Generator Source sells new, surplus and used units worldwide. Are you ready for winter and is your genset prepared to supply your operation with reliable power?”
Work Outdoors? You Need To Get Winter Ready Too!
On a side note, with so many in the power industry, not to mention oil and gas, workers are often exposed to the elements, so we also want to remind folks to be safe when working outdoors as part of this #WinterReady plan.
Ready.gov advises you to always have a fully charged cellphone and carry a portable recharger, in case of an emergency. Carry a change of clothing and a blanket in your car. If you must be outdoors for work or play:
• Wear several layers of loose clothing. Layering provides better insulation.
• Make sure to protect ears, face, hands and feet in extremely cold weather. Boots should be waterproof and insulated. Wear a hat; it will keep your entire body warmer.
• Move into warm locations during work breaks and try to limit the amount of time outside on extremely cold days.
• Carry cold weather gear, such as extra socks, gloves, hats, jacket, blankets, a change of clothes and a thermos of hot liquid.
• Avoid touching cold metal surfaces with bare skin.
