Power Outages In 2024: The Year In Review

By Understanding The Patterns Of Power Outages And Implementing Reliable Backup Systems, Businesses Can Better Prepare For And Minimize Impacts Of Future Outages.

It’s January, time for the power outage report for 2024. Which states avoided power outages all together and which states were at the top of the list with the most outages? And why are there so many power outages?storm.jpg

Below you’ll find the reasons and the results and why it’s important to have standby power.
Storms still account for the most power outages. Tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, heavy winds, snow and ice all caused power outages in 2024.

Rolling blackouts also accounted for numerous outages in large cities and highly populated states. These rolling blackouts often happen during heat waves where the energy demand is too much for the grid. Power companies will also often cut power in high wind areas to avoid sparking a blaze with a downed powerline.

State Ranks

This year, California took top honors with 39 power outages. The total time of all the outages was about 414 hours, roughly 17 days.

Texas, a state criticized for its power grid, came in second with 31 outages lasting 740 hours (approximately 30 days) due to an early season hurricane. Louisiana also had extended outages with 697 hours of downtime resulting from 16 outages.

There is a big group of states that experienced 10-12 power outages. Maine, Massachusetts, Washington, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi all were listed in that range.

Where’s Florida you wonder? Florida had just seven outages resulting in 309 hours of downtime.
There were seven states that didn’t see a single major power outage, according to the FIXR report. Hawaii, Kansas, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wisconsin avoided outages. Utah deserves special recognition as it only had one power outage. That outage took less than an hour to restore power.

The Solution

Downtime experienced from power outages, whether from an act of nature like a storm or manmade like a rolling blackout, don’t have to affect your bottom line. Investing in standby power in the form of an industrial generator can be a gamechanger.

Our team at Generator Source can match a standby generator for your business needs. From a small 20 kW to help cold items stay cold at a restaurant to a 4 MW to run a wing of a hospital or keep the lights on at a stadium, our team does it all.
