LUMA, the private energy company that manages much of the island's power, reported a problem. A failure in one of the main electric lines at a power plant caused a chain reaction. This led to many power plants shutting down.
They lost power at 5:30 AM on Tuesday morning, New Year’s Eve. All facilities, homes, and businesses without standby generators lost power. For the most part, Wednesday afternoon, New Year’s Day, residents finally saw power restored.
"We know how frustrating today’s blackout is for our customers and their families," said LUMA in a statement. We are sorry for how the ongoing investigation affects our plans. We wanted to say goodbye this year and welcome the New Year.
The utility company asked residents to conserve energy while the system slowly recovered from the outage.
"These days, I ask you to use energy wisely. This will help reduce load shifting. More people can then access electricity. The system can also start up without major problems," said Governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón on social media.
The U.S. territory continues to struggle with power outages reeling from Hurricane Maria in 2017. The power grid was already getting worse because of poor maintenance and low investment when the strong storm hit the island.
The power grid has experienced many major outages. These include earthquakes in 2020 and a fire in 2022. Hurricane Fiona also caused a big outage that same year.
An investigation is currently underway to determine what caused the line to fail and then affect the other power plants. It is surprising that San Juan's main hospitals lost power.
These hospitals are Centro Médico and el Hospital Municipal de San Juan. They have generators, but they mainly cool the hospital. They are often not big enough to power the entire building and are often neglected.
What Can You Do To Protect Yourself From Outages In Puerto Rico?
Generator Source has been working with businesses in Puerto Rico for years. Our Florida field services team often helps resorts and other large building-based businesses. Our team installs industrial standby generators. This way, they can serve their guests and customers without power interruptions.
Our most recent project on the island was the decommissioning and installation of Caterpillar gensets at a resort. Our experienced team removed a pair of 1500 kW 3512 CATS and installed a pair of 2000 kW 3516s at an upscale destination property. With this kind of industrial power, the resort can function while the rest of the island deals with common outages.
We’ve highlighted our recent work in Puerto Rico here.
Our team knows how to handle the logistics needed to send standby units to places like Puerto Rico and around the world. We specialize in sales, rentals and service of 60 Hz generators. To learn more, click sales and service, or call (866) 518-1240.
Story Summary
What caused the power outage?
The large power outage happened because of a problem with an underground electrical line in southern Puerto Rico. This failure triggered a "cascade effect," resulting in the shutdown of several power plants across the island.
When did the blackout happen, and how many people did it affect?
The blackout began at 5:30 AM on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 (New Year's Eve). It affected over 1.2 million of the 1.47 million customers. This left almost 90% of Puerto Rico's population without power.
How long did it take to restore power?
Power restoration began in phases and took approximately 24-48 hours for most customers. By Wednesday afternoon (New Year's Day), 96% of customers had their power reinstated.
Were there any immediate impacts on critical infrastructure?
Yes, the blackout affected various critical facilities:
- Hospitals
- Water treatment plants
- Sewage facilities
What measures were taken to restore power?
- LUMA Energy worked with crews and companies overseeing power generation to solve the outage
- Power was restored in phases, prioritizing critical infrastructure.
- The government and energy officials coordinated efforts to expedite the restoration process.
How did this outage compare to previous incidents?
Puerto Rico has experienced several major power outages in recent years:
- Hurricane Maria in 2017 caused severe damage to the power grid
- Earthquakes in 2020 led to outages
- A fire in 2022 caused a massive blackout
- Hurricane Fiona in 2022 also resulted in widespread power loss.
What are the ongoing challenges with Puerto Rico's power grid?
- The power grid has been in decline due to lack of maintenance and investment.
- Puerto Rico continues to rely on generators supplied by FEMA to stabilize the grid.
- The island's electrical system faces persistent fragility and unreliability.
What precautions are recommended for residents during power outages?
- Conserve energy to help reduce load shifting and allow more people to access electricity.
- Consider alternative power sources like small gas stoves for essential needs.
- Be prepared for potential rotating temporary outages as the system stabilizes.
What steps are being taken to improve Puerto Rico's power infrastructure?
- The incoming governor has pledged to appoint an "energy czar" to manage the power grid.
- US government funding has been allocated for strengthening the grid and supporting recovery efforts.
- Ongoing efforts are being made to implement crucial infrastructure enhancements.
