The customer contacted us interested in selling their outdoor Kohler generators. They were in the health care business. The generators were backup power for a medical center. This type of installation is considered a facility with a critical power requirement.
The building was slated for complete demolition. This included decommissioning and removing the backup generators. The removal had to be completed before beginning demolition efforts. We arrived on site to provide an assessment for removing, shipping, and purchasing the generators.
The job list included the standard disconnection and removal of generators. Complete demolition of a building requires the disconnection of electrical equipment associated with the emergency generator. We committed to updating the client at all project milestones.
While the principles behind decommissioning and removing a generator is always the same, every project is different. Decommissioning is to withdraw from service. When a backup power system is withdrawn from service, all associated equipment must be disconnected from the building grid.
The generators were both loaded and transported with one semi tractor-trailer. The area was inspected and cleared for the use of crane services. This allowed the generators to be loaded as a complete assembly. This meant that trailer space and disassembly/assembly time was saved. We arranged crane services with a local provider. Trucking and crane services were coordinated so there was minimal vendor waiting time.
We decommissioned the backup power system and removed both generators. This required the disconnection of the associated back up power system equipment. We arrived with all of the necessary equipment for the disconnection and removal of the generators. Crane and trucking vendors arrived on schedule, and the decommissioning and deinstallation was completed.
The project required multiple steps to complete. The steps are divided into groups with a brief explanation below:
Assessment and Presentation

During the meeting, we conducted an inspection of the generators and associated equipment. Some of the tasks in the inspection to accomplish were:
Buildings that house hospitals or data centers are examples of businesses that cannot lose utility power for any amount of time. The backup power system can consist of a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) system, which is sometimes called a battery backup system. This project only required the disconnection and removal of the power generation equipment.
- Determined size of crane and number of trucks needed for generator transportation.
- Inspect the site for obstructions for crane and semi tractor-trailer location.
- Measure generator dimensions for shipping. Kohler 500 kW requires muffler to be removed to comply with height restrictions.
- Inspected electrical equipment for securing and disconnection.
- Created a list of tools and vendors needed to complete the decommissioning, disconnection,and removal of the generator and backup power system.
Our process dictates that we photograph the generators, the surrounding area, and the equipment associated with the project. This aids in the creation of the Statement of Work (SOW). This document outlines the details of the job. Generator purchase details are included.
We offer a turn-key solution to decommissioning and deinstallation projects. The customer is not required to arrange any vendors to accomplish tasks associated with the generation system. The SOW includes all vendors required to accomplish the tasks within the scope of the project.
The customer was presented with an in-depth SOW. We explained all areas of the document and answered any questions. When the proposal was accepted, we set a date to complete the project. Below are some of the project milestones.
Emergency Generators & Equipment
All of the crews arrived at the location on the date set. The generators were disconnected, prepared for shipping, and loaded. This required a coordinated effort between at least two separate vendors in addition to us and the customer.

Project milestones are tasks that show an important achievement in project completion. Below is a list of some of the tasks:
- Disable main generator breaker
- Disconnect cables from building
- Disconnected cables from generator circuit breakers for both generator units
- Secure block heater and battery charger circuit breakers for both generators in main panel
- Removed 500 kW generator muffler and enclosure (crane services needed for disassembly)
- Prepared both generator units, 500 kW muffler and enclosure for shipping
- Loaded both generators on semi-trailer using crane service
- Received and unload generators at Brighton CO. location
- Unload generators, and muffler
- Installed muffler onto 500 kW generator
- Prepared generators for sale and performed a 31-point inspection
