Emergency Call Finds Fuel Spilling Out Of Cummins Generator

Our Team Troubleshot the Issue And Solved The Problem

A client called with an emergency and our Austin team jumped into action! What would cause fuel to spill out of the tank? Here, our Austin Branch Manager Chris shares the rundown of events and why a partner like Generator Source is a must whether you are in Austin, TX, Colorado or Florida!

“What a wild turnaround,” said Chris. “We signed a new customer contract and within 24 hours, they called us for an emergency with fuel spilling, overflowing from the tank.
“We arrived on the scene and quickly worked to control the spill and after diagnostics, we discovered that the fuel tank’s atmospheric vent pipes were improperly installed at startup,” continued Chris.

“They were venting the secondary containment instead of the primary fuel tank,” said Chris. “Pressure ended up building inside while the tank was being filled and with no way to vent fast enough, the fuel had nowhere else to go but out of the tank.

“We worked with the OEM, showed them what was going on and had them come out and perform a warranty service call under policy,” continued Chris. “The pipes are now installed correctly on the normal side for the tank and the OEM is also going to supply the secondary containment emergency vent pipe as well as that pipe wasn’t installed at all during the unit’s initial startup.”

This wild turn of events and emergency call illustrates the continued need for companies to utilize an experienced industrial generator service team like Generator Source. Not only did Chris solve the generator’s problem, but he also got the OEM involved to correct the errors since the unit was still under warranty and install mistakes were obviously made.

Story Highlights

What happened during the emergency call involving the Cummins generator?
A customer called Generator Source with an emergency where fuel was spilling out of their Cummins generator's tank. The Austin team quickly responded, controlled the spill, and diagnosed the problem as improperly installed atmospheric vent pipes.

What caused the fuel to spill from the generator's tank?
The fuel tanks' atmospheric vent pipes were incorrectly installed, causing pressure to build up inside the tank during filling. This pressure had no way to vent properly, leading to fuel spilling out of the tank.
