Colorado Cold Storage Facility Gets Generator Serviced
To Avoid Power Outages. Team Is Growing With Field Services Now in Four Locations. Which One Works For You?
Cold storage facilities are a business that can’t be without standby power. Whether it’s a smaller generator to power emergency systems or a couple large industrial generators to power massive chillers, Generator Source is there to make sure all systems are running flawlessly.
This week I was able to join one of our Colorado field service technicians as he worked on a smaller generator at a cold storage facility just northeast of Denver. This unit handled emergency power for the business side the building. It was a Blue Star 150 kW.
“We are going to give this diesel genset a thorough inspection, then perform preventative maintenance and wrap it up with a load bank test to make sure this unit is up to the chore of powering this place when a power outages hits,” said Derek as he began inspecting the unit. .jpg.aspx)
“This unit has not been serviced since it was put on site, so I’ve already noted the age on the batteries,” said Derek. “They are still showing power, but batteries on a standby generator should be changed every 2-3 years to avoid failure.”
Derek then disconnected the unit at the breaker so he could safely look at the unit and begin work. After a complete inspection including taking fluid samples, it was time to connect the load bank cables.
“I will connect the load bank, give this unit a start and let her warmup for a bit before we kick on the load bank unit and start putting the unit through the testing,” added Derek.
I watched Derek methodically work to make sure the unit was correctly hooked up, safe and ready for the load bank. He turned on the load bank unit and let it warm up as well.
After about 15 minutes monitoring and recording data on the standby generator, Derek began to add the first dose of power. Our technicians typically add 20% load to the unit every 20-30 minutes, recording data at each interval.
“The entire load bank process takes about 2 hours on a smaller unit like this 150 kW,” added Derek.
“It gives us and the client peace of mind that the standby generator will do its job when it is needed," added Derek. "Here in Brighton, Colorado (same city as our Colorado/company headquarters) the power does get knocked out about 4 to 5 times a year. Keeping businesses powered means no downtime for folks with generators. They need to keep food cold and operations running, so here we are to help.”
