Pharmacies Rely On Generator Source For Emergency Power To Combat Outages
Essential Services Need Standby Power To Operate During Power Outages-- And We Are There!

You might not think a pharmacy needs emergency power. However, when you consider temperature-dependent medications and computers for patient records, it becomes clear. Pharmacies are a key part of essential services in our communities and need to remain powered. That’s why they work with Generator Source!

“Our field service team was working on site at a pharmacy near our Pensacola location,” said Oliver, branch manager. "The company has teamed up with us to ensure they never miss a beat. Their Cummins standby generator works perfectly during a power outage."

Power outages are becoming more common. Weather, increasing demand for energy and a deteriorating infrastructure are all contributing to energy woes.
A pharmacy needs emergency power to keep medications at the right temperature. This is especially important for temperature-sensitive drugs. These drugs can spoil or expire during a
power outage without standby power.

"The pharmacy needs backup power for its refrigerators and freezers. These hold medications and vaccines. This way, patients can get what they need during power outages," added Oliver.
“The pharmacists also need access to computers that hold valuable, detailed information for patient history and care.

A backup generator like the Cummins here provides uninterrupted power in the event of an outage. The unit kicks on when with an auto transfer switch to avoid any lag in power. People often connect a standby generator to dedicated circuits to power the essential systems when power is cut.

Preventative Maintenance & Load Bank Test

“Within a week of providing the pharmacy point of contact (POC) with a quote, we were on site to perform the 2-hour load bank and preventative maintenance,” said Oliver.

“When our team arrived on site, they checked with the POC and immediately began setting up for a load bank test,” continued Oliver. “The technician gets everything set up and begins changing filters, taking fluid samples, inspecting belts and hoses. This unit’s records stated that it hadn’t been serviced since 2019 so we immediately updated the batteries and the unit started right up.”

The control panel displayed that the Cummins had only 20 hours. The technician continued his inspection as he began the 2-hour load bank test. The technician also took temperature readings and all vitals as the unit ran through the test.

“These load bank tests simulate the building asking for power while the load bank unit itself adds test power as well helps dissipate the energy,” said Oliver. “We slowly add 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% power to the unit and see how it responds and performs. The unit did well, and our tech gave it a clean bill of health.”

Our teams always receive a lot of questions about load banks and how they work. To learn more about the process, click here.

Story Summary

Why do pharmacies need emergency standby power?
Pharmacies require emergency power to maintain critical operations during outages. This includes:
  • Keeping refrigerators and freezers running to preserve temperature-sensitive medications and vaccines
  • Powering computers to access patient records and prescription information
  • Ensuring essential services remain available to the community
What type of generator do pharmacies typically use?
Many pharmacies use standby generators that automatically activate during power failures. These generators are connected to dedicated circuits to power essential systems without interruption.

How often should pharmacy generators be serviced?
Regular maintenance is crucial. In the example, the unit had not been serviced since 2019. This shows the need for more regular maintenance. Perform preventative maintenance and load bank tests at least annually. Partnering with Generator Source, businesses and services will not have to worry about their equipment or wonder about the last time it was serviced.

What is a load bank test?
A load bank test simulates various power demands on a generator to assess its performance. Technicians gradually increase the load (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%) while monitoring the generator's response and vitals.

Why are power outages becoming more common?
Several factors contribute to increasing outages:
  • Extreme weather events
  • Growing energy demand
  • Aging power infrastructure
How quickly can a generator service be arranged?
In the case mentioned, Generator Source provided a quote and performed on-site maintenance the next week.

What does preventative maintenance for a generator include?
Typical maintenance tasks include:
  • Changing filters
  • Taking fluid samples
  • Inspecting belts and hoses
  • Updating batteries if needed
  • Conducting performance tests
How long do load bank tests typically last?
The example given describes a 2-hour load bank test, which is a common duration for thorough performance evaluation.

Can pharmacies rent generators if needed?
Yes, Generator Source offers rental options for temporary power needs or during maintenance of permanent systems.
